Social Studies

Social Studies is a subject composed with several other disciplines such as history and geography. Studying Social Studies in third grade offers the opportunity to look at ourselves -- our houses, clothes, food, means of transportation, environments, and behavior. By using a scientific method students can learn about our world and our societies. Social Studies also provides the opportunity to see some important issues that affect us, such as pollution, and challenge students to come up with solutions.

In third grade, students will learn by studying simple cases from our own history and from events that happened in other parts of the country and the world. The third grade program teaches students basic knowledge related to the United States geography and history, a brief introduction to California's geography. This program touches a number of important topics such as pollution, conservation, economic and social organization.

Third grade students learn while developing critical thinking skills such as application, synthesis, analysis, and evaluation.  During the lessons students will take time to work in teams and individually.

Students will read appropriate materials and participate in organized discussions about different topics. They will collaborate in various writing, science, and social studies projects, and present reports to the class.

A major goal of the Social Studies program is to make students aware of the importance of being a part of a family and a community, and to understand the role other people and themselves play in our societies.  It is a way of planting in the third grade the seed for a future productive citizen.
